iPad: Free Apps for K-2

As I’m meeting with the different teachers, I’m hearing over and over that people are looking for iPad resources. While there are many paid apps, there are also lots of great free options that are available. Here are a few that I’ve found so far. I will add to this as I find more.

Number Flash: Grades K-2: Helps children transition from counting to number understanding. Watch a video demonstration of Number Flash in action!

Sushi Monster: Grades 1-5: This is a fun, interactive, and multi-level game to practice math fluency. Completely engaging and appropriately challenging.

10 Frame Fill: Grades K-1: This game provides children practice with recognizing additive “10 Families” (e.g., 1 and 9, 2 and 8, etc.). Set the 10 Frame to fill in sequence or randomly. Use contrasting color chips to fill the 10 frame as you determine the answer; select to show a corresponding number sentence.

Domino-KIDS: Grades K-1: A powerful arithmetic math set for the 1st Grade! To counting, calculating or simply to have fun in playful handling on numbers! First counting … then calculating, pushing, pulling, tapping … and then understanding!

Splash Math: Grade K: Prequel to the successful Splash Math Series Grades 1 to 5 – Splash Math Kindergarten app allows kids to get started with Math practice in fun way. Ideal for kids 3-6 years in age, it’s a superb math game for kids in preschool and kindergarten.

Number Pieces Basic: Grades K-5 (more of a manipulative than a game): Number Pieces Basic helps students develop a deeper understanding of place value while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students can use the number pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, count, regroup, add, and subtract. The drawing tools allow students to label representations and show their understanding.

Todo Math: Todo Math is the award-winning and beloved early elementary math app that offers an unsurpassed 300+ days of math activities, 20+ multi-level games, and 30+ engaging mathematical missions!

TapFun Math Problems: This app includes a wide variety of addition and subtraction word problems designed for students to listen, read, draw and solve. The format and problems were developed and authored by experienced educator Anne Gardner (Nationally Board Certified in the U.S. in Literacy – biography below). The audio narration was performed by Brad Mielke, a professional voice over artist with 18 years of experience. (Free version is level 1 only)

Animal Math: Designed for K, appropriate for K-1: Travel the world over from Bessie’s Farm to the plains of Africa to the deepest reaches of outer space as you join math-explorer Emma through more than 100 fun math games on a quest to help her animal friends find a way home!  Playable by kids of all ages with lots of positive encouragement, professional narration and catchy music. Cute characters include cows, chickens, lions, giraffes, kittens, puppies, robots and monsters! Designed by parents and teachers, this app adheres to Common Core Standards for kindergarten math.

Bitsboard Math: “If you want your kids to excel at math then download this app! It includes over 6 math games and over 1,000 pre-build practice tests to master multiplication, addition, subtraction, and division! It’s a huge time saver for parents and teachers. Not only that, the math games are fun and interactive to keep kids engaged and learning more!”

Raccoon Ninja: Raccoon Ninja is on a mission to return the sacred scrolls, and he has to fight his way through the Skunk Ninjas to retrieve them. Follow along with his adventure by answering correct addition and subtraction problems. Throw weapons at the correct answers and get weapon upgrades as a reward for your progress.

Endless Numbers: Grade K: As a follow-up to Endless Alphabet, set the stage for early numeracy learning with Endless Numbers! Kids will have a blast learning number recognition, sequences, quantity, numerical patterns, and simple addition with the adorable Endless monsters. Each number features interactive sequences and equation puzzles with numbers that come alive, and a short animation that provides context and meaning to each number.
